Commentary
And when he mentioned the conditions of the arrogant ones, who were led by their arrogance to denial in this world, he mentioned their conditions in the Hereafter and said: ﴿And those﴾ meaning: those who denied it, while the case is that those ﴿who denied Our signs﴾ meaning: they did not consider their greatness ﴿and the meeting of the Hereafter﴾ meaning: and their meeting with it or their meeting with what they were promised in it, which is necessary from the denial of the signs that carry the affirmation of it regarding the high morals ﴿their deeds have failed﴾ meaning: they have become corrupt and have fallen ﴿their works﴾ [and the verse is from the implication: the affirmation of negligence at first indicates its intention secondly, and the meeting secondly indicates its intention at first].
And when it was as if it was said: Why have they become invalid? It was said: ﴿Will they be rewarded except for what﴾ meaning: the reward of what ﴿they used to do﴾ meaning: by invalidating their deeds, even if they performed every good deed except for faith, because they invalidated the signs and the Hereafter by their denial of them, meaning: they considered them false. And the reward is of the same kind as the deed, and the result is that when they were blind to the signs because they did not reflect upon them nor submit to what their minds indicated regarding them, rather they closed the door of thought in them; Allah increased them in blindness and sealed their perceptions, so they became unbeneficial and they did not comprehend. And these signs are the greatest deterrent from arrogance; for they clarified that it leads to disbelief and persistence upon it and weakness in all matters.
