And when that was concluded, it was as if it was said: And how would a rational person choose that? How about one who has seen the signs and witnessed the miracles? He said: ﴿I will turn away from My signs﴾ meaning: the heard and seen, despite their greatness, as indicated by the addition of turning away from understanding them and following them, and the ability to criticize them in a way that affects their nullification. ﴿Those who are arrogant﴾ meaning: they seek arrogance with what does not belong to them and act with their powers in it ﴿in the earth﴾ meaning: its kind, which I commanded to be humble in it.

And when one whom Allah has elevated with a virtuous attribute places himself in its position and does not belittle it, considering what Allah has bestowed upon him, that may sometimes be called arrogance. And sometimes his seeking those morals that necessitate his elevation is called arrogance. [And it is not like that, even if it resembles it in form, due to its difference in meaning; for it is the safeguarding of the self from humiliation, and it is lowering the self below its status as a craft, not humility. Arrogance is the rejection of the truth and the contempt of people. Thus, in the restriction here, there is a hidden indication of establishing dignity with the truth and standing at the limit of humility without deviation towards craft, standing on the condition of the determination set upon the essence of the fire of arrogance; Imam al-Sahrawardi said: And no one is supported in that and remains steadfast upon it except the feet of the firmly rooted scholars.] Allah, the Exalted, said as a precaution against it and as an entrance for every arrogance [except] that which is from the complete truth: ﴿Without right﴾ meaning: only one who chooses other than the best is one who chooses it by My decree that cannot be rejected and My high command over the matter of every serious one, so I adorn for whom I know the wickedness of his element and the baseness of his essence what I want until they commit every vile act and abandon every beautiful act, so they turn away from the signs and are blind to the clear indications.

And when He informed of their arrogance in the present, He turned to their actions in the future and said: ﴿And if they see every sign﴾ meaning: seen or heard ﴿they will not believe in it﴾ meaning: due to their arrogance from the truth. ﴿And if they see the way﴾ meaning: the path ﴿of guidance﴾ meaning: righteousness and correctness that is worthy of being followed ﴿they will not take it as a way﴾ meaning: they will not walk it with intention from them and consideration and deliberation, but if they walk it, it is without intention. ﴿And if they see the way of misguidance﴾ meaning: of error ﴿they will take it as a way﴾ meaning: with the utmost desire, intention, and reliance for its pursuit.

And when this was a matter of wonder, He answered those who ask about it by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great turning away that exceeds the mere turning away of blindness from faith and the taking of guidance ﴿is because they﴾ meaning: due to the fact that they ﴿disbelieved in Our signs﴾ meaning: regarding their greatness ﴿and they were﴾ [meaning] particularly by nature and disposition ﴿heedless of them﴾ meaning: their habit and practice was to treat them with avoidance until they seemed to be forgotten, thus they insist on what occurs from them.
