Commentary
And when He prevented him from the vision after his request for it, and He responded to that with the merits of actions and words, the listener yearned for what he was met with in terms of honor. So, He, glorified and exalted is He, began to inform him of what He granted him as a consolation for what He prevented him from and a command to thank Him by saying: ﴿He said, O Moses﴾, reminding him of His blessings in a context indicating the greatness of their value and the obligation of thanking for them, removing from him the appearance of greatness to comfort him and be gentle with him. ﴿Indeed, I have chosen you﴾ means: I have chosen you with a profound choice, just as what is chosen is selected from something free of any impurity. ﴿Over the people﴾ means: those who are in your time. ﴿With My messages﴾ means: the numerous signs that I have manifested and will manifest through you [from the scriptures of the Torah and others]. ﴿And with My words﴾ means: without an intermediary, and as if He repeated the preposition to draw attention to that, just as He chose Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, over the people in general in every time with his general message, with His miraculous words, and with His speaking without an intermediary in the heavens that are always sanctified and purified from being defiled by disobedience.
And when that necessitated the utmost inclination and activity, it caused His saying: ﴿So take what I have given you﴾, meaning: specifying for you with it ﴿and be among the grateful﴾, meaning: those deeply rooted in the attribute of gratitude, ingrained in it.
