And when this was a proof that such idols, which they passed by, are not suitable to be worshipped, that was not enough for them due to what has been established of their ignorance. Perhaps they thought that others besides Allah are permissible to be worshipped. So it is as if it was said: This is not sufficient as a response for such as these. Did he say to them anything other than that? It was said: Yes! He said, denying and expressing amazement, 'Is there any god other than Allah?' That is, the one who has all greatness, so He is the one deserving of worship. 'I seek for you a god,' meaning: I ask for you a deity. He denied that anyone other than Him should be worshipped and confined the matter to Him. Then he clarified it by saying: 'And He is,' meaning: while He alone 'has preferred you' over others among those who are in your time or before you 'over the worlds.' That is, if there were no reason for their obligation to be exclusive to Him in worship other than His specification for them in detail over all His other worshippers, who have reached knowledge of those who are stronger than them in state and greater in number and wealth, it would have been sufficient.
