And when this was, in reality, a negation of what Allah took from the servants by the covenant of reason, He followed it with a true negation. He said, clarifying their state at every verse, and perhaps he expressed it in a way that encompasses them without explicitly stating the repetition; for that is enough in what has been mentioned of the negation and sinfulness: ﴿And when the torment fell upon them﴾ meaning the detailed punishment that necessitates disturbance. ﴿They said, O Moses, invoke for us your Lord﴾ meaning: the One who is good to you, and they did not allow their arrogance and pride to acknowledge Him by saying: our Lord ﴿by what You have promised with You﴾ meaning: from the prophethood from which this goodness that you see him doing with you comes; then they affirmed the covenant by their saying, resuming or justifying: ﴿If You remove the torment from us﴾ meaning: the punishment that our hearts and all our conditions have been disturbed by ﴿we will surely believe in you﴾ meaning: we will make you safe from denial by establishing belief, and that will be exclusively for you and specific to you ﴿and we will send with you﴾ meaning: in your company, we will not keep anyone of you from the other ﴿the Children of Israel﴾ meaning: as you asked; and it indicated the proximity of the response by the 'fa' in His saying:
