Commentary
And when what they said indicated a bad disposition and roughness of character that does not accept remedy, he followed it with something worse than that. They asserted that whenever anything came to them in the future, they would respond to it with disbelief. So he said: ﴿And they said, 'Whatever'﴾. It is composed of 'ma' twice: the first is conditional and the second is for emphasis. The first 'a' was changed to a 'ha' out of dislike. It is said: [MAH] is the sound that is for stopping, and what is conditional, meaning: stop from what you are in. Then they resumed with 'ma' ﴿that comes to us with it﴾ meaning: at any time and in any condition it may be; then they clarified what is brought by saying: ﴿of a sign﴾ meaning: a sign of your truthfulness, and this is based on their claim. Therefore, they justified it by saying: ﴿to enchant us﴾ meaning: to deceive our minds ﴿with it﴾ and divert us from what we are upon to what you want, so we call it magic and you call it a sign. Then they responded to the condition by saying: ﴿So we are not﴾ meaning: all of us ﴿for you﴾ meaning: specifically ﴿believers﴾ meaning: from denying you.
