Commentary
And when they did not remember nor soften, He caused to arise from their taking His saying, defining their foolishness (p-39), expressing in good with the tool of confirmation, indicating that it is more prevalent than evil, urging gratitude: ﴿So when﴾ meaning: what arose from that was only that they were when ﴿a good thing came to them﴾ meaning: the complete state that they love from fertility and others, and He defined it after confirming it, indicating its completion ﴿they said: This is ours﴾ meaning: we are deserving of it, and it indicated that good is more than otherwise by His saying with the tool of doubt along with the indefinite: ﴿And if an evil befalls them﴾ meaning: a state they dislike.
[And when the affliction with evils pertains to them and nothing befalls the Children of Israel from it, their display of superstition was evident in their rejection of it and their denial of it. He indicated, glorified and exalted is He, by merging the ت that they were only concealing it to those whom they could deceive from the ignorant and the foolish in the form of adornment and secrecy, unlike what is in Yasin, for He said]: ﴿They take omens﴾ meaning: they are pessimistic ﴿with Moses and those with him﴾ meaning: by saying: this evil has not befallen us except by their bad omen, and it is an action from الطير, which is the deliberate intention of the bird to fly for the sake of optimism with it from good or evil. Its origin is that the Arabs, when a bird passed from their right to their left, they said: it is unfortunate, meaning: it is ominous, from البَرْح, which is severity. And if it flew from the left to the right, they considered it blessed, saying: it is fortunate after the unfortunate, meaning: the blessed after the ominous, and it is known that the intended meaning here is pessimism due to its association with the evil.
And when they denied in both instances, He said, resuming with the emphasis: (p-40) ﴿Indeed, their omen﴾ meaning: their fate that was decreed in eternity from good and evil does not increase nor decrease ﴿with Allah﴾ meaning: the King who has no command for others and has decreed all things, so no one can bring it about other than Him at all ﴿But most of them do not know﴾ meaning: they have no knowledge at all, so they do not find guidance to what benefits them and they think that the servants have an influence in that, and for that reason you see them attributing things to causes they imagine.
