Commentary
And when Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, urged them with that, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informed that He had done what He had told them. He mentioned its preliminaries and said: "And certainly" meaning: He said to them what He said while we and our might had "overcome" meaning: we had subdued "the family of Pharaoh" and we had made their condition easy and facilitated their affairs "by years" meaning: by drought and hunger. For the year is commonly referred to in this context as it is referred to in general; and since the year is referred to in terms of the deficiency of crops, He specified the fruits and said: "and a decrease in fruits" meaning: due to calamities if the water is abundant, or the year for the nomads and the deficiency for the settled people "so that perhaps they may remember" meaning: so that their condition may be like that of one who hopes his observer to remember in himself, even with the slightest means of remembrance, as indicated by the merging. For indeed, hardship removes the arrogance which is the cause of standing with fortunes and necessitates for a person tenderness, so he says: This has only occurred to me because of my denial of this messenger and my worship of one who does not remove evil from himself or from others.
