Commentary
'And what do you deny' means: 'you reject' 'from us' means: 'your action of that against us and you blame us' 'except that we have believed' (p-33) means: 'except what is the essence of all boasting, which is faith' 'in the signs of our Lord' means: 'which have become great because they are derived from Him, and He has always been gracious to us, so it is obligatory upon us to thank Him.' 'When' [means: 'at the time'] 'it came to us' we did not delay in recognizing the truth [the affirming one], and this necessitates honor, not vengeance; then they informed him that they were approaching all that he might do to them. They said: 'Our Lord' means: 'O You who are gracious to us, capable of saving us' 'pour' means: 'pour abundantly' 'upon us' means: 'in what we have been threatened with, this which You have strengthened against us' 'patience' means: 'a lot that overwhelms us as water overwhelms one who is poured upon until what terrifies us does not frighten us.' 'And take us' means: 'seize our souls complete while we are' 'Muslims' means: 'deeply rooted in submission, both outwardly and inwardly, with evidence of the truth.' The apparent meaning is that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, answered them in what they asked, hinting at the mention of the Lord, and He did not decree it upon them due to His saying, glorified and exalted is He: 'You two and whoever follows you are the dominant ones' [Al-Qasas: 35]. And there has not come in a reliable report that He killed them, and it will come at the end of Al-Hadid, from the history of Ibn Abd al-Hakam, what is explicit in their salvation.
