Then he caused to arise from this his saying: ﴿So they were defeated there﴾ meaning: at this great and lofty matter ﴿and they turned back﴾ meaning: as a recompense for their hearts turning away from those truths in their state of ﴿humiliation﴾ meaning: after they had been - in their own estimation and those who say as they do, which is the majority - exalted. And there is no humiliation or disgrace greater for the falsehood than the appearance of its falseness in a manner in which there is no way out.
