Commentary

And when the matter was concluded and the longing intensified for what Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, had done, he said, informing about him, in reference to ﴿And they came﴾ [Al-A'raf: 116] ﴿And We revealed﴾ meaning: manifesting Our greatness before the eyes of the witnesses with that which no one is able to match. ﴿To Moses, 'Throw down your staff'﴾ meaning: so he threw it down. ﴿And behold, it﴾ from the moment he threw it down ﴿swallowed﴾ meaning: it devoured with a true, intense, and very swift swallowing, as indicated by the omission of the 'ta.' This also indicated the abundance of what they had done by his saying: ﴿What they are fabricating﴾ meaning: they renew when they throw it down in their deception and turning it away from its face. So it swallowed what was filling the valley of sticks and ropes. Then Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, took it back, and behold, it was as it had been; nothing increased in its measure beyond what it had been. In this context, it is evident that Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, remained steadfast after the great things he saw from their magic, to the revelation to him, indicating his good manners, blessings and peace be upon him, in that difficult situation and his calmness under the proximity with his Sender, glorified and exalted is He, until the emergence of His noble commands.
