Commentary

And when it was as if it was said: So on what matter did their opinion settle? It was said: On delaying the matter until the gathering of the magicians for the opposition. Allah, the Most High, informed - as a sign that the essence of the saying of the elite is from Him - that they approached Him addressing Him, drawing attention to Him, who had informed them about Him, glorifying Him, attributing the matter to Him by saying: ﴿They said﴾, meaning: [the elite] to Pharaoh [after their opinion had settled in their minds regarding what they had set before Him of the intention] ﴿Delay﴾, meaning: Moses, peace be upon him, ﴿and his brother﴾, meaning: delay them for our relief from this confrontation for a time until we look into their matter ﴿and send in the cities﴾, meaning: [from] the kingdom of Egypt ﴿gatherers﴾ who will gather for you the magicians and collect them from every deep ravine, and the gathering is: the collection by force.
