Commentary
And when they deceived them until they stopped them from what they understood about them regarding the initiative to follow by claiming that he is a magician; they turned them away from that and frightened them by saying that he intends to impose upon them his people who were slaves to them and to remove them from their lands, which are like their shadows for their souls by his saying: ﴿He intends to drive you out﴾ meaning: O Egyptians ﴿from your land﴾ meaning: this which your forefathers established for you and by which you sustain yourselves; and when the context was to clarify their wickedness, he omitted their saying in the other place ﴿by his magic﴾ [Ash-Shu'ara: 35] to indicate their haste in concluding the matter in its harm [indicating their exaggeration in wickedness by their knowledge that he is right and not a magician].
And when the purpose of this speech was to win over the addressees, they sought to win them over after they had stopped them, then they frightened them with what they caused from the previous discourse by their saying: ﴿So what do you command?﴾ meaning: what do you say in this consultation, O lords, for it to be obeyed.
