And when He mentioned - glorified is He - what He granted them of empowerment, He reminded them of what they were upon before this empowerment from non-existence. This was a reminder of the blessings in a context indicative of the resurrection, which He had completed establishing, and of what He specifically granted their father Adam - blessings and peace be upon him - of empowerment in Paradise through creation and formation, the pouring of the spirit of life and the spirit of knowledge, and His command to the inhabitants of His heavens to prostrate to him, and His anger towards whoever opposed him and expelled him from the place of his honor and the source of his happiness. He settled him in that highest place and most noble abode, permitted to him in all that is in it except for one tree. So when he disobeyed the command, He removed him from it and expelled him from it. In this is a warning to the people of empowerment against the removal of the blessing in the continuation of the blessings and the infliction of wrath. So He said: "And certainly We created you" meaning: by what We have of attributes of greatness. "Then We formed you" meaning: We determined your creation and then your formation by making in you a capability close to that by specifying each part of the material with its determined measure by the moistening of the clay of Adam - blessings and peace be upon him - in a state that accepts that, just as the soil is prepared by its moistening with rain so that a tree may grow from it. And that tree may be prepared to accept the form of the fruit, or it may not be, as He, the Exalted, said: "And certainly We created man from a portion of clay" [Al-Mu'minun: 12] "Then We made him a drop in a secure resting place" [Al-Mu'minun: 13] "Then We created the drop into a clinging substance, then We created the clinging substance into a lump, then We created the lump into bones, and We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We developed him into another creation" [Al-Mu'minun: 14].
And the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said as in the authentic narration from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: "(Indeed, one of you is gathered in the womb of his mother for forty days, then he becomes a 'alaqah for a similar period, then he becomes a mudghah for a similar period, then the angel is sent and he blows the spirit into him)." And from him also, may Allah be pleased with him, in Muslim, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, say: "(When the nutfah has passed forty nights, Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and creates its hearing, sight, skin, flesh, and bones. Then he says: O Lord! Is it male or female? Your Lord decides what He wills and the angel writes...)" This narration appears to contradict the wording that came before it and the verse. It is understood that the meaning of 'he shaped it' refers to preparing it during the second forty days to accept the form, a preparation close to action. He facilitated its beginning by covering it in a specific form, unlike what came before it, as it was a nutfah and was far from accepting the form. Therefore, they differed regarding its respect and whether it is permissible to corrupt it and cause its expulsion. The meaning of 'created' is determined, meaning: He set a limit for everything of that which cannot be exceeded in general. The evidence for this metaphor is his uncertainty about whether it is male or female. If that were as it appears, there would be no doubt about whether it is male or female, as the instruments of male and female are part of the form. Thus, this verse aligns with His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "When your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I am creating a human from clay'" [Sad: 71] "So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down to him in prostration" [Sad: 72]. This is creation by action, and what is in this surah is by depositing the power that brings it closer to Him. The intended meaning of the verse is the reminder of the blessings as an appeal for reconciliation and a warning against opposition, meaning: they have lost themselves while we have bestowed upon them the blessing of establishment after we created them in the mentioned form after they were non-existent. We commanded our angels to prostrate to their father and expelled the one who was arrogant towards him with an expulsion unlike any other, distancing him from our sacred place a distance with no proximity to it. We settled their father in Paradise, the abode of our mercy and closeness. He, glorified and exalted is He, said translating this: "Then We said" meaning: regarding what we have of exclusivity in greatness, "to the angels" meaning: those present at that time from the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, all of them, as indicated by the definite article (al), whether we say it is for comprehensiveness or for the genus, "Prostrate to Adam" meaning: after he became a man standing upright with a spirit, as is known from the naming. Then the cause of this matter is His saying: "So they prostrated" meaning: all of them as indicated by the exception in His saying: "Except for Iblis". Since the meaning of that is to exclude him from those who prostrated, that he did not prostrate - he explicitly stated it by saying: "He was not among the prostrators" meaning: to Adam.
