Commentary

And when He commanded creation to follow the messengers and warned them against opposing them, He emphasized His warning to them with the punishment of this world and then with the punishment of the Hereafter. He turned to remind them, encouraging them in that by bestowing His blessings and warning them against their deprivation; for facing the matter is more restraining for the addressee. He said in the context of the situation: ﴿They have certainly lost themselves﴾ [Al-A'raf: 9] ﴿And We have certainly established you﴾ meaning: they have lost them while We have established you for saving them by creating the powers and abilities and the flow of blessings, and We made a place where they can attain establishment ﴿in the earth﴾ meaning: all of it, there is not a spot in it except that it is suitable for their benefit, even by consideration. ﴿And We made for you﴾ meaning: by what We have of greatness ﴿in it livelihoods﴾ meaning: the plural of livelihood, which are things by which life is attained, and it is the management of the days of life with what is beneficial, and the 'ya' is original; therefore, it is not hamzated. [And likewise, what follows the 'alif' of its plural is an original vowel and there is no 'waw' before its 'alif' like in 'awail' nor 'ya' like in 'khayair' the plural of 'khayr', for it is not hamzated except in rare cases like 'manair' and 'masaa'ib' the plural of 'manarah' and 'musiibah'].

And when the result of what has passed is that He - glorified and exalted is He - created them and strengthened them and created for them [what] sustains their powers, they consumed His goodness and worshipped others - His saying produced the effect of emphasis: ﴿Little do you thank﴾ meaning: for the One who has bestowed upon you His blessings, both apparent (p-362) and hidden, by which you save yourselves. And Abu Hayyan said: It refers back to those who were addressed with: ﴿Follow what has been revealed to you﴾ [Al-A'raf: 3] and what is between them is presented as a means of consideration and admonition by mentioning what their matter has come to in this world and what it will lead to in the Hereafter. End.
