Commentary
And when he depicted the beginning of destruction in the most horrific form, he completed it indicating the severity of its ugliness with a word of delay, saying: ﴿Then We would certainly cut off﴾ without any duality, by which we have of greatness, a cutting that makes every cutting fade away before it. ﴿from it the watin﴾ meaning the greatest vein in the neck, the firm, permanent, strong one which is called the artery. It is between the collarbone and the throat. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that it is the cord of the heart. In the dictionary: a vein in the heart, if it is cut, its owner dies - this is the end. The expression was chosen because its substance in this arrangement revolves around strength and permanence. Therefore, it would be lost to its owner with its loss. And Ibn Burjan said: a vein connected to the cord of the heart, internal to the spine, fills the entire body, watered by the liver, which is the house of blood. The blood flows from it in the body, taking from it sixty veins, which are the rivers of blood in the entire body. From these rivers, the body takes eighteen that water the chest, and seven that water the eye, and four that water the brain. The watin is from the junction of the two thighs to the junction of the chest between the two collarbones. Then all the other veins divide from it to the rest of the body. And life cannot usually continue after its cutting. And in Al-Ma'idah, when He said: ﴿And Allah will protect you from the people﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 67], what is beneficial here.
