Commentary
And when there remained from the claims that they were fabricating against him the slander in the message, meaning that he stumbled upon some of the Books of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, that were revealed to those before him from the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, and he attributed them without being revealed to him. The evidence that this is not the case is that it is customary for a person among the people to not have knowledge of something that no one among them has knowledge of, especially if that person has little interaction with the scholars. How about if that person is unlettered, does not write, and cannot read, as was the case with him, blessings and peace be upon him? He said, emphasizing his estimation: So if the revelation of the Lord of the worlds had not been upon him, they would not have been able to do so: 'And if he had fabricated' meaning he would have burdened himself to say once in a lifetime a lie 'against us' regarding what we have of attributes of greatness, majesty, beauty, perfection, and pride 'some sayings' that we did not say or we said and did not permit him in them. And it is the plural of 'Af'oolah' from the saying, like 'Ahdahik' is the plural of 'Udhikah', not the plural of sayings, so that it would be the plural of the plural, because it is necessary for him to not be punished for less than three [sayings].
