Commentary

And when the custom was established that the people of the presentation are divided into two categories: accepted and rejected, and He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the accepted first to entice towards its state and to encourage by its outcome and good end, He followed it with the rejected to deter from their deeds by what He mentioned of the vile states of theirs. He said: ﴿And as for he who﴾. And since the indicator of disgrace is giving in a repulsive manner, without specifying the giver, He said, establishing the action for that and indicating the humiliation of being taken and his inability to refrain from something that would displease him: ﴿He is given his record﴾, meaning the record of his deeds - may Allah protect us from that. ﴿In his left hand, he will say﴾, meaning due to what he sees of the bad outcome that has been uncovered to him until he does not doubt it because of what he sees of his vile actions that he has presented. And everything that comes suggesting silence on that day is from the realm of denial and defending with falsehood regarding what he was upon in this world. ﴿Oh, I wish﴾, wishing for the impossible, and it followed the same pattern as what preceded in the construction for the action indicating his humiliation and lack of nature. He said: ﴿I was not given﴾, meaning from the giver what ﴿my record﴾, meaning this which reminded me of the evils of my deeds and made me aware of their recompense.
