Commentary
And when he mentioned the effect in revival, he followed it with the effect in the inanimate objects. He began with the lower ones due to their proximity to humans, so his lesson from them would be greater. He said: ﴿And it was carried﴾ meaning by mere ability ﴿the earth﴾ [meaning -] the flat one, and it shook with a shaking ﴿and the mountains﴾ [meaning -] those by which it is stable, so they were raised from their places, and they were crushed so that they became scattered dust, with no stone or boulder remaining in them.
And when the force of crushing and conveying was intended in its effect, He made the mountains one thing and said: ﴿So they were crushed﴾ meaning the two masses leveled the earth and its pegs, and they spread and crushed some of each other ﴿in one crushing﴾ meaning they became like a vast dune, and they were leveled with the easiest of matters, so nothing was distinguished from either of them, rather they became in the utmost levelness, from their saying: a she-camel that is crushed, meaning it has no hump. And a flat land, meaning an extensive, level one. (p-354) They said: and crushing and pounding - are two brothers, and crushing is more eloquent. Abu Hayyan said: and crushing involves the separation of parts, and pounding involves the mixing of parts.
