Commentary
And when he ﷺ forbade him from obeying the disbelievers and warned him of their flattery, and gave them examples, and threatened them until he said: ﴿So leave Me and whoever denies this narration, We will gradually lead them on﴾ [Al-Qalam: 44]. And he concluded with the story of Yunus (peace be upon him) for training on patience and not weakness, even if it is by yielding to the flatterer. Thus, the estimation was a cause for what is in it of prohibition: for they only exaggerate in their harm so that you become weary and leave what you are in. He said, adding to this estimation, informing him of what is in their hearts of enmity against him and in their hearts of malice towards him, so that his caution from their flattery would intensify, confirming that whoever sees their flattery thinks they are compliant and denies their exaggeration in it as their tyranny: (p-334) ﴿And if﴾ meaning: and indeed ﴿they almost﴾ and the place of the implicit is shown in generalization and linking the ruling to the description, so he said: ﴿those who disbelieved﴾ meaning: they concealed what they could of the evidence you brought.
And when the [“n” -] was softened, he brought the lam which is its knowledge and said: ﴿they will almost make you slip﴾ meaning: from the intensity of their enmity and their envy and the rage of their hearts ﴿with their eyes﴾ meaning: they create for you the removal from what you are in and the great slip that accompanies it in a place of refutation where there is no holding on to destruction, and anything less than that of harm until they throw you from your stature to the ground, just as a person slips and falls for what appears in their eyes when directing [the gaze -] for the cleverness from the anger and wrath indicating that their chests are boiling, and it is from their saying: he looked at me with a look that almost knocked me down, [meaning -] if he could have knocked me down with it, he would have knocked me down, as Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿They almost assault those who recite to them Our verses﴾ [Al-Hajj: 72]. And it was said: they will destroy you by the evil eye. Al-Qushayri said: they used to, when they wanted to afflict something with their eyes, fast for three days, then look at that thing and say: how beautiful it is, and the thing looked at would fall at that moment. They did this to the Prophet ﷺ and said: how sincere he is as a man, so Allah protected him from them. And it is narrated by the two Shaykhs from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The evil eye is true." And in a narration from Ahmad and Ibn Majah: "The devil and the envy of the son of Adam are present with it." And for Ahmad from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) who raised it: "The evil eye is true, and if anything were to precede fate, it would be the evil eye. And if you seek protection, then wash." And for Abu Nu'aym in Al-Hilyah from the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) who raised it: "The evil eye is true; it puts the camel in the pot and the man in the grave." And for Abu Dawood from the hadith of Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her): "And indeed it can reach the horseman and throw him down."
And when he mentioned this great calamity, he mentioned its context, expressing it in the past tense as a reminder of the past state, and he said: ﴿When they heard the reminder﴾ meaning the Qur'an, which was dominated by the reminder of matters that everyone elevates from themselves. From the horizons, their desires were the first thing they heard, out of envy for what was granted to it of honor. Thus, their hearing of it was a cause for what they had of hatred and envy, and that time did not increase them except in anger, as indicated by ﴿And they say﴾ meaning a saying they continuously renew.
And when he, blessings and peace be upon him, was far removed from anything shameful, they affirmed their saying: ﴿Indeed, he is a madman﴾, bewilderment in your matter and repulsion from you for what they know, that no one hears it without a motive for their lies. They inclined entirely towards you and were attached to you, and they were pleased with what you brought. And from Al-Hasan, that reciting this verse is a remedy for being afflicted by the evil eye.
