Commentary
And when all of that was negated, it was established that they were in great danger. And that He, glorified and exalted is He, is the One who has exclusive knowledge of the unseen. He has informed of their destruction because of him, blessings and peace be upon him. And that the disbelief of whoever disbelieves and the faith of whoever believes is by His decree and predestination. Therefore, both must occur. This was a reason that carried him [to] patience until the time that He, glorified and exalted is He, appointed for relief. So He said, causing to happen what He decreed: 'So be patient,' meaning to have the utmost patience and to be fully present against all that they say about you and against all else that occurs from them and from others of the bitter decree and predestination, 'for the judgment of your Lord,' meaning for the decree that He has decreed and destined. The Benefactor to you who honored you [with] what He honored you with from the message and obligated you with what He obligated you with from the conveying, and He forsook them with the denial. He extended for them in the appointed times and broadened upon them the blessings and delayed what He promised you of victory.
And when the outcome of the story of Yunus - blessings and peace be upon our Prophet - was that he found the honor of the message burdensome due to the severe matters involved in dealing with the creation, he was tested. This was a reason for his acceptance of that. Then the reason for the Islam of his people was the nearness of punishment from them and the proximity of its overwhelming to them. He indicated [to him] with his story that he is intended to be exalted, blessings and peace be upon him, and over all the prophets - and the elevation of his nation over all nations by what requires patience [against] what is burdensome from harm or a severe matter that has passed. So he said: 'And do not be,' meaning let not your state be in impatience and haste towards anything else. And when he had opened the surah with the letter Nūn, which denotes the fish, he expressed it here to affirm his intention. So he said: 'Like the companion of the fish,' meaning like the state of the companion of the fish, which is Yunus ibn Mattā, blessings and peace be upon him, 'when,' meaning at the time, and the operative in this context is the omitted condition and similar to it, or the estimation may be: let not your state be like his state, so that you may not experience [the same] as what happened to him when he 'called' meaning his Lord, the Nurturer to him with His kindness in the darknesses from the belly of the fish and the darkness of what surrounds him from the mass and the darkness of the depths of the seas. 'And he was,' meaning and the state that he was in at his calling, 'full of distress,' meaning filled with anxiety, worry, intensity, and grief, held back from speaking due to the depth of his sorrow. He was restrained from all that he wanted of action until he was compelled by Him, glorified and exalted is He, to supplication and humility, from the distress, which is the silence from fullness and the swallowing of bitterness. From this, I have filled the vessel, meaning I tightened it and filled it, so it was full. The one who is full is the one who is distressed - as if he had taken by his fullness while he is expelling his soul.
