Commentary
And when he was astonished by them and mocked them, he concluded that with a higher mockery that reveals their flaws to the utmost extent and brings upon them the most severe destruction. He said, warning them of turning away: "Ask them," meaning, O Messenger, whose signs have been erased by the strength of their lights.
And when the question is a cause for acquiring knowledge, "Ask" was attached to its second requirement, and it was right that it should be preceded by "from." He said: "Which of them is that?" meaning, the great matter of the covenant and the transmitted and rational evidence. "A leader," meaning, a guarantor and protector, or a lord, or a chief, or one who speaks with truth or falsehood, so that he may be bound by his claim of the correctness of that.
What you leave behind is a laughter for the servants and a wonder for those present among them and those absent. So none of them dared, due to what you know of the truthfulness of this Qur'an and all their statements being rooted in falsehood, to claim that, despite their intense enmity and their love for overcoming and their arrogance.
