Commentary
And when he negated the evidence of reason and transmission, along with his astonishment at them and his mockery of them, it remained that a person might sometimes covenant with another regarding something, and he is bound to fulfill it even if it is outside what reason and transmission call for. He negated that by saying: ﴿Or do you have oaths﴾ meaning very strong ones ﴿upon us﴾ that you have burdened us with ﴿exceeding﴾ meaning (p-321) due to its greatness to the utmost ranks of emphasis, whereby reaching beyond it is considered non-existence, meaning that its reaching is the reaching and nothing else, or its permanence is limited ﴿until the Day of Resurrection﴾ and it is not possible to depart from its obligation except on that day, for it requires your honoring in both abodes.
And when he mentioned that oath by the oaths, he mentioned the one upon whom the oath is taken, saying: ﴿Indeed, for you﴾ meaning specifically, apart from the Muslims ﴿is what you judge﴾ meaning what you do as the action of the judge who is bound by his words due to the greatness of his matter, in a manner of emphasis that cannot be avoided, so you judge for yourselves with what you desire of good.
