Commentary

And when the judgment cannot exist except in a manner that is specified, and He, glorified and exalted is He, has negated their judgment by denying all its possible specifications, and the correct judgment must be based on reason or transmission, the invalidity of their judgment became clearer by negating both matters together. So he said, adding to what he means by saying: Do you have any proof from reason to which you resort: ﴿Or do you have a book﴾ that is, a heavenly one known to be from Allah, specific to you ﴿in it﴾ that is, not in other than it from the legends of the ancients and the scriptures of the obliterated ﴿that you study﴾ that is, you read with a reading that you have perfected its mixing or you have enriched your understanding because of it.
