Commentary
And when the absence of inheritance for each of the two groups of the house that has been described (p-318) is a leveling between the doer of good and the wrongdoer, and this is not befitting for a Wise One to do, it is necessary to deny it to establish that what He has informed of, glorified and exalted is He, can only be as such. This is especially since the disbelievers used to say: 'Indeed, they are like the Muslims or in a better state than them.' This is because if there is no resurrection, as they used to think, then they have become equal in what comes after it with what they have preferred over them in this world by following desires and attaining pleasures. And if there is a resurrection, they would say, due to a doubt that their desires led them to: 'Will we not be in a better state than you in the estimation of Allah for a good life, just as we are in this house? For indeed, whatever He has granted us in this house, we are better than you in His sight.' So Allah, the Most High, said, denying and refuting that with the utmost denial and refutation, criticizing the judgment based on ignorance, which is the utmost blame, negating equality to be a revenge that is higher than what is more appropriate, causing what He has decreed: 'And it will not be for anyone other than the pious.' ﴿So shall We make the Muslims﴾ meaning those who are deeply rooted in submission to Our commands and connected to what We have commanded to be maintained, seeking Our pleasure, so there is no choice for them with us in the soul or otherwise due to their good natures ﴿like the criminals﴾ meaning those who are firmly established in severing what We have commanded to be connected [that you do not agree to such a thing, but whoever opposes you, you cut him off, even if the matter reaches killing.]
