Commentary
And when calamity strikes, it is a cause for tenderness and repentance for those whom good is intended, and an increase in disbelief for others. He resumed his saying: ﴿The middle of them said﴾ [meaning] in opinion, reason, age, leadership, and virtue, rebuking them: ﴿Did I not tell you﴾ that what you have done is not appropriate, and that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is on the lookout for whoever changes what is in himself and deviates.
And when the prevention of good, especially in [such a] matter, necessitates a suspicion of deficiency in Allah, exalted is He, either by thinking that He, glorified is He, does not fulfill what has been given in charity or that He is unable to destroy what a person has been stingy with, he said, resuming: ﴿Why﴾ meaning why not ﴿do you glorify﴾ meaning you affirm the glorification of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, from what your actions imply. And the least of glorification is the exception when swearing, casting doubt on the ability of man and affirming the ability of the Sovereign, the Just, bringing to mind His greatness, glorified and exalted is He. And the context of the speech indicated that they were prepared for repentance by his saying:
