Commentary

So he caused to happen as a result of their actions this overwhelming thing that it circled around them, meaning their garden. A circling thing, meaning a destructive punishment that surrounds, although it is a matter that is very easy with Allah, even if it is great in relation to them because it left nothing of it. And the circling can only be at night, as it has been said, and this is refuted by the saying: "When a touch from the devil touches them, they remember" [Al-A'raf: 20].

And since this is a blame in appearance, he informed that it is kindness and education in meaning by saying: "from your Lord," meaning the one known for greatness that cannot be defined and for the kindness towards you. He is deserving of educating your people to accept from you as He educated the companions of the garden by what necessitated their repentance. And it is truly fitting for the education of the servants to understand from you and to be deserving of avoiding the world and turning towards the higher matters. And they, meaning while the companions of the garden, who are swearing, are sleeping at the time of the sending of the circling.
