Commentary
And when this mentioned one has immersed himself in evil, the listener expects his punishment. He said, informing that he will make for him from disgrace and scandals that which will make him notorious among the creatures in this world and the Hereafter: ﴿We will mark him﴾ meaning we will make what befalls him of shame in both abodes like a mark that does not fade away. The Arabs say: 'He marked him with a mark of evil.'
And when the mark is a source of pain, and placing it in a location that cannot be concealed is more painful, and the face is the noblest part of a person, and the nose is the most apparent and honored part of it, for this reason they made it a place of honor and pride, and derived from it the concept of nobility. He said: ﴿on the snout﴾ meaning the entire long nose and what is close to it from the upper lip is a mark that clearly stands out to be a disgrace among the people and a scandal for his people, and humiliation and shame. And indeed, for my life, this [mention] is a disgraceful one and a vile sin of disbelief and what accompanies it. And he will have on the Day of Gathering the greatest disgrace that is worse than this, given that he has already confirmed in this world this humiliation in reality, as he was struck on the Day of Badr with a blow that shattered his nose - this was said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. And the expression about the nose in this context is for belittlement and mockery.
