Commentary

And when one who desires to elevate himself by belittling others, and the prevention of the desire for monopolizing what is prohibited so that others do not need it and become devoted to it, for it is in his nature that he does not connect except out of greed, not gratitude, against the generous. For he raises himself above desires, and he connects only out of gratitude for the favors, so he gives generously, thinking that people are likewise. He said: "Mannā'" meaning one who is abundant in prevention, severe in it, "for good" meaning all good from wealth, faith, and others from himself and from others in religion and the world - and so on.

And when one who commits these vile acts among people limits himself to backbiting and slander based on reality, and in prevention to what he has the ability to prevent - he is despicable. It is clarified that he is not satisfied with that, but rather increases upon it by exerting effort in what makes him more despicable. He said: "Mu'tadin" meaning one who is firmly transgressing the limits in all of that, "Athīm" meaning one who is excessive in committing what necessitates sin, so he leaves the good things and takes the vile, desires sins, and seeks them, and abandons acts of obedience and shows disdain for them.
