And when he prohibited him from obeying the one who denies and explained it to him, and there were among the people those who conceal their denial, he said, pointing out the signs of the denier: ﴿And do not obey﴾ meaning at any time from among them or from others ﴿every oath-taker﴾ meaning one who is excessive in swearing oaths, even if his denial does not appear to you. The intention is not to prohibit in general, but the generality of the prohibition, meaning stop from every oath-taker, for the prohibition is a principle and all are included in it, as has been previously explained in the end of Al-Baqarah in His saying, the Exalted: ﴿And Allah does not love every disbeliever, sinful﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 276]. And these descriptions stem from lying and a vile nature, so they are like details. The frequency of swearing is indicative of the corruption of the intellectual power, which results in the loss of the reverence for the truth. Thus, its possessor does not recognize what is good nor does he deny what is wrong. For this reason, he swears both truthfully and falsely, however it may happen. ﴿Humiliated﴾ meaning despicable, weak, low in ambition and nobility, low in opinion, because a person does not frequently swear except when he imagines within himself that he is not believed except by that, as he has no awe in the eyes of those he speaks to, and the majesty that would make him credible because of it. And he prefers idleness due to what is in it of agreement with his nature, and that is the greatest humiliation.
