Commentary
And when He described it with boiling, He clarified its cause as a representation of the intensity of its burning upon them. He said: "It almost separates," meaning it is close [to] some of it separating from others, as it is said: "So-and-so is about to split from his anger," and "So-and-so became angry, and a piece of him flew into the earth and a piece into the sky" - a metaphor for the intensity of anger. "From the rage" means upon them, as if He omitted one of the two تاءs to indicate that separation and connection occur in a way of speed that is hardly grasped in its true understanding. All of this is due to the anger of its lord. It will come on the Day of Resurrection, being led to the gathering place with a thousand reins, for each rein there are seventy thousand angels leading it with it. And this intensity of rage overcomes the angels and carries upon the people, cutting off all ties and shattering the people of the gathering place, and nothing will prevent it from them except the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who will meet it with his light, and it will return. Although each angel has the power that if he commanded [it], he could uproot the earth and what is upon it from the mountains and ascend with it into the sky without any difficulty. This is as it was extinguished in the world with a puff, as narrated by the group except for al-Tirmidhi. This is the wording of Abu Dawood from Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: "The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him - and he mentioned his prayer until he said: Then he puffed at the end of his prostration. He said: 'Uff! Uff! Did You not promise me that You would not punish them while I am among them and they are seeking forgiveness?" In the narration of al-Nasa'i, it is mentioned that he said: The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, the fire was brought close to me until I feared that it would engulf you."
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned its state, He followed it with their state in the torment of the heart due to their belief that they are oppressors in a way. He clarified the reason for their punishment as a warning against it, saying: "Whenever". And since the injurious is merely the act of throwing, it was built for the passive to indicate that and their insignificance by the ease of their throwing His words: "It was thrown into it," meaning Hell, by the pushing of the guardians upon them, who are the most enraged against them from the fire. "A group" means a gathering that is in utmost haste, rushing and trembling in their insides from the intensity of the driving. "They asked them," meaning that group, "the guardians of it," meaning the fire, a question of reproach and reprimand and intimidation.
And when it was as if it was said: What was their question? He said: They said, reproaching them, accusing them, arguing against them in their deserving of punishment, increasing their torment by tormenting their souls after the torment of their bodies: "Did a warner not come to you?" meaning in the world, "a warner" means one who warns you of this abode and reminds you of what has befallen you and what has befallen those before you from the calamities, for your denial of them with the signs, and he recites to you the revealed books.
