Commentary

And when he expressed the blame of it by the totality of blameworthy things, he followed it with a description of some of its frowning, in the manner of reasoning. He said, indicating by the implication of their lowliness and contemptibility, expressing with a tool of affirmation, indicating that it is a matter that must happen. And with the passive construction, that their being thrown is extremely easy for everyone who is commanded to do so: "When they are thrown" meaning those who disbelieved are cast away. And the most contemptible of any thrower we commanded to throw them "in it" when the angels will seize them and throw them as firewood is thrown into the fire. "They heard it" meaning Hell itself "gasping" meaning a terrifying sound more repugnant than the first sound of a donkey due to its intense burning and boiling, or for its inhabitants - with the omission of a genitive. "And it is boiling" meaning it boils with them like the boiling of a cauldron due to the intensity of its heat and fervor. They will not cease to be in it, ascending and descending like the grain when the water is boiling with it; they have no stability at all.
