Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed about the creation of this creation, and alerted to some of its details and commanded to observe and repeat it, the listener was first to direct his gaze towards the sky due to its nobility, the strangeness of its creation, the wonder of its arrangement, and the height of its elevation. Thus, he was in a position to expect the news about this adornment that was adorned with it. He said in response to [what] he would encounter, confirming with an oath, informing that the wise should distance themselves from denying anything attributed to the owner of this creation of perfection. [Adding to what] you estimate: This amount is enough in indicating the greatness of the creator of this creation and the completeness of His power: ﴿And certainly﴾ he attracted gratitude by bringing forth the means, saying while looking at the position of greatness, diverting minds from what was necessitated by “the Most Merciful” from the universality of mercy, reminding of what is in the previous verse, and alerting to what is in the adornment of the stars from its mixture with the meteors, which is the punishment of “the rebellious jinn.” ﴿We adorned﴾ is another indication that points to greatness after that first indication. ﴿The lowest heaven﴾ means the nearest heavens to the earth, which witnesses, and you always see it, and it is the ceiling of the house in which you have gathered in this worldly life. ﴿With lamps﴾ means very bright stars, their multitude surpasses counting, they are visible, moving, illuminating, and radiant. They are the planets that illuminate the earth at night like the light of the lamps that you adorn your ceilings with, thus benefiting a portion of the light of the morning, and the adornment with them does not prevent them from being fixed above it [from the heavens] and they appear to us according to the clarity of the celestial bodies, and for those lamps from the intensity of illumination.
And when He informed - glorified is He - of His great power in it, alerting to what is in it of bringing about benefits with those lights and guidance in religion and this world, which if it were not for it, no one would have benefited completely at night. He informed of what is in it, along with the adornment of repelling harms in a general expression, and although the intended meaning is the majority, what is for the stars is not the same as what is for guidance and signs. He said: ﴿And We made them﴾ meaning the stars from where [they are] by Our greatness while being adornments and signs for guidance ﴿and as missiles﴾ the plural of rujm, which is a source and a name for that which is thrown. ﴿for the devils﴾ those who deserve expulsion, distance, and burning from the jinn due to their burning. This is a clarification of Our greatness and a guarding of the lower heaven, which is the place of the descent of Our command with decree and destiny, and the sending down of this wise reminder, so that they do not corrupt by stealing the hearing from it upon the people their true religion, and confuse them in their matters by mixing the truth with the falsehood with which We concluded the religions, so that they lead them - because they are their enemies - from light into darkness, as they were in ignorance, along with what is in it of what He created, glorified is He, in its mixtures of moisture and dryness, heat and cold, and moderation, which gives rise to the four seasons, and its domination over it by rising and setting, and movement and stillness, by which what is to be reached is known, from what the messengers informed of the decline, along with what indicates from night and day and evening and morning, and things that description fails to encompass in their essence and in counting their benefits, until if something were to be absent from what is in the heavens, which the Wise has arranged for the rectification of this world, every living being and plant on the face of the earth would perish. The shooting star, which is stoned with, is separate from the fire of the stars, and it is fixed in its orbit in a state like a spark of fire taken from it, while it remains in its state without diminishing. This is a justification for its being called missiles. So whoever among them is followed by the shooting star, it kills him or weakens his matter and confuses him. It is also possible that the intended meaning is: assumptions for the devils of mankind, who are the astrologers, speaking with it as a stoning of the unseen in matters that are of great trial, to distinguish the certain from the shaken and the knowledgeable from the ignorant. In Al-Bukhari, it was said by Qatadah: 'The stars were created for three: adornment for the heaven, missiles for the devils, and signs by which guidance is sought. Whoever interprets them in any other way has erred and lost his share and has undertaken what he has no knowledge of.' And when the decree was: 'And We stoned them with it' by action when they steal the hearing, to distance them from the abode of the honored and the place of purity and comfort and the descent of decree and destiny, and as a punishment for others like them, a torment for them in this world, He followed that with His saying, warning of His majesty after having encouraged the greatness of His beauty: ﴿And We have prepared﴾ meaning We have made ready in the Hereafter along with this (p-233) that which is in this world by virtue of Our greatness ﴿for them﴾ meaning the devils who steal the hearing ﴿a punishment of the blazing fire﴾ meaning [the fire] which is in the utmost intensity of burning. So in the verse is a glad tidings for the people of hearing, sight, and intellect, and in it is a warning that is not hidden.
