Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, began the surah with His great blessing, the completeness of His power, and His uniqueness in His kingdom, and indicated that by His uniqueness in causing death and giving life, He concluded with something similar regarding water, the existence of which is a cause for life and its absence is a cause for death. So He said, striking with a warning, indicating by repeating the matter for further reprimand, admonition, and reproach, pointing to the specification of what was ambiguous among the people of misguidance, and clarifying what he hinted at from that generality.
﴿Say﴾ meaning: O greatest of our creation and most knowledgeable of us: ﴿Have you seen﴾ meaning: inform me with a clear and unmistakable report. And since He was greatly concerned with this noble Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, His heart settled in their warning by indicating kindness towards them for his sake. So He began the warning with a letter of doubt, saying: ﴿If﴾. And since the blessing is most intense when it is in the morning, which is the time of awaiting success, He said: ﴿Your water has become﴾ meaning: that which you count in your hands - by what the addition has indicated.
And since the intended meaning is exaggeration, He made it the essence of the source, saying: ﴿Ghawran﴾ meaning: descending into the earth such that it cannot be reached by any means - by what that description indicates as a source. ﴿So who will come to you﴾ at your weakness at that time, and your need, and the trembling of your hearts, and the disturbance of your thoughts, ﴿with water flowing﴾ meaning: continuously flowing that does not cease or is apparent to the eyes, easy to obtain, except Allah, Lord of the worlds, for He is the one capable of that. Indeed, that other has returned, as you see, to that first one, and embraced it in the best and most complete manner - and Allah knows best.
