And when what he warns of must certainly occur, and every coming is near, he expressed that with the conjunction and the past tense, saying, turning minds towards turning away, because the time of seeing the punishment is most appropriate for humiliation: ﴿So when they saw it﴾, meaning the promise of the unveiling of what was promised when it occurs. He confirmed the meaning of the past, and the conjunction is with his saying: ﴿Near﴾, meaning of great closeness to them. This is by expressing the name of the doer with the verbal noun, emphasizing the intended meaning. He affirmed the exaggeration [with the letter 'ta' because it is used for emphasis -] if the feminine form does not come from it, especially if another indication suggests that.
And when the frightening aspect in the warning is the falling into evil, not by the condition of being from a specific one, he said: ﴿Evil has appeared﴾. And when evil manifests on the face, he said: ﴿Faces﴾. He showed in the place of concealment a generalization and a connection of the ruling by description, saying: ﴿Those who disbelieved﴾, meaning evil has appeared and the utmost dislike is on the faces of those who have incurred this description, even if it is on the slightest aspects of incurring it, and its cause is gloominess.
And when there is no greater pain than reproach when surrounded by the disliked without the need to specify its doer, he built for the passive the saying: ﴿And it was said﴾, meaning to them a reprimand and rebuke: ﴿This is what﴾, meaning what has preceded from your stubbornness, your cunning, and your arrogance (p-266) ﴿You were﴾, meaning by nature and disposition ﴿because of it﴾, meaning due to it and for its sake. He directed the saying to address them because the reprimand by it is more painful in the punishment: ﴿You call﴾, meaning you request and expect the request for it with intense demand, reaching the utmost effort in the manner of hastening that it descends upon you, its disliked act, like the act of one who does not care about it at all. You repeat that request and return to it at every moment, turning away from striving for salvation from the aggression of punishment and attaining the good promise with abundant reward, to clarify the strength of their request for it and their calling to it in mockery of it, until it is as if there is nothing else they seek. He placed the beneficial preposition often for specialization, for it is the act of one who calls something [and -] with something when he requests it, and Allah called it with the disliked: He brought it down upon him.
