Commentary
And when the decree was: 'Indeed, He has conveyed, glorified is He, in His admonition to them by Himself and on your tongue, O most noble of creation, blessings and peace be upon him, and this is by what the context has certainly guided to. He mentioned their state at that time and said, informing of the density of their natures, where their secrets were not softened for accepting the love of Allah, the Exalted, and the stirring of good states of patience that is steadfast, certainty, and good impression for accepting advice, and fear, and not being proud of anyone other than Allah, the Exalted, from the perspective of benefit or harm. Likewise, He directed the saying to the turning away, signaling to the severity of His anger towards them: 'And they say,' meaning they renew this saying continuously in mockery and denial. It is permissible that it be a state from the 'and' in '[But - ] they persisted': 'When is this?' And they increased in mockery by saying: 'The promise,' and they inflamed and stirred up clarification for the denial [according to their claim] by saying: 'If you are' by nature and disposition 'truthful' in that it must be for us, and that you are favored near Allah. If they had the steadfastness of patience and certainty, they would not have acted so recklessly by expressing this ugly saying, whose apparent meaning is a request for information about the timing of the promised matter, and its hidden meaning is the hastening of it in mockery and denial.
