Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated their distance from guidance and from the gratitude that they pride themselves on over all people with both of these, He sought to attract them with what He has deposited in them of divine, spiritual subtleties that necessitate, by their luminosity, the ascension to the abodes of sanctity and the sources of companionship. This indicated His ability to gather them, warning them against continuing in their aversion, in a manner that each of them finds within themselves, in a way that indicates the perfection of His ability with what He has deposited in them along with those subtleties, along with the dense qualities of earthly natures that necessitate degradation. So that, if those subtleties elevate him through repentance, he becomes diligent in purifying the traces of those dense qualities that have descended, just as it is for the crops when harvested from the remnants of those roots, which if not uprooted from their origin, return to what the crops were initially. Then He said, resuming the explanation, for it is a clear proof in itself of what has preceded: "Say, He is" meaning alone, "the One who created you" meaning He created you, spread you, and increased you after you were like dust, weak children. Then He strengthened you, then made you old, weak, and settled you in anger, fear, and stubbornness that drives you towards the craving for what the natures incite you to seek in the earth, which He has made submissive to you and provided you from it with the plants that He has previously mentioned. Then He returned it to it and its annihilation in it, then its resurrection as it was after it became dust and something perishable, a sign of the ability to resurrect. There is no difference in this between Him and you at all. So, from Him was the beginning, and to Him is the limit, "You will be gathered" piece by piece to the Barzakh, in one push on the Day of Resurrection, in the easiest manner for whom He wills from His servants, against your will, just as your matter was in this world. For indeed, there was nothing more beloved to man among you than rest and tranquility. It is as if He, glorified and exalted is He, compels him with what He has deposited in him of opposing natures and has stirred for him from the causes in seeking his provision and other matters to strive towards what he dislikes. Just as He has the power over that from you in the beginning, He has the power over something similar in the end, to judge between you and reward each according to their deeds, just as every king does with his subjects, and every person among you does with his community.
