Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned the people of treatment with the attribute of honor for what they have attained of honor, He followed them with their opposites, those who have made themselves submissive to the indication of the qualified intellects for the description of knowledge. He said, confirming what the opposites have of denial: "Indeed, those who fear" meaning they fear [fear] that softens their hearts and the hearts of others, such that they are like love on the fried [food], they do not find stability due to their expectation of punishment. Whenever they increase in obedience, they increase in fear. They give what they give while their hearts are trembling, so they protect themselves from the boiling of the fire with it. He shifted from the context of the majesty that gathers to the attribute of benevolence, indicating that they have been dominated by the view of benevolence which led them to gratitude, along with what fear has alerted them to regarding their being characterized by the distinction that led them to terror. He said: "Their Lord" who has done good to them by developing them with what He has made for them of the means in the stages of goodness. And if they fear Him while looking at the attribute of His benevolence, what do you think of them when looking at the attributes of His vengeance? "In the unseen" meaning while they are absent from Him, glorified and exalted is He, and His warning is absent from them while they are absent from the eyes of people. And fear has filled what is absent from them from the people, which are their hearts. They are with the people speaking, while their hearts are burning with the fires of fear and are speaking with the swords of awe. They leave sinning where no one from the people sees them! And this cannot be for them except through great training for what is with people of the forces that lead to tyranny. Some of the knowledgeable said: In man, there are [properties] that call for knowledge of what is mixed with them from the fortunes, thus disputes arise from them - and we seek refuge in Allah - regarding pride, greatness, majesty, and beauty. The heart calls for uniqueness in existence, command, and prohibition. There is no one except that he is harboring what Pharaoh said, but he does not find for it a way as Pharaoh found. And the intellect calls for in its management and influence the belief that if it were enabled from existence, it would manage it. And it sees that its management is the management even if the corrupt has corrupted. Likewise, it continues to say: If it were like this, it would be like that. And the self cannot imagine that it is of the strength and power such that if it wanted to destroy cities and build them, it could. So let man beware, for his worst enemy is his self that is between his sides. For whatever he leaves, it spreads. Allah, the Exalted, said: "No! Indeed, man certainly transgresses" [Al-Alaq: 6] "when he sees himself as self-sufficient" [Al-Alaq: 7] and forgets what comes after it "Indeed, to your Lord is the return" [Al-Alaq: 8]. And for this reason, some of the kings - and they were the wisest of kings - would arrange for someone to be close behind him, [saying to him -] whenever his armies gathered after a short while: You are a servant, he keeps repeating that. And the king says to him whenever he says it: Yes. So it is upon the wise to train his self to return assured that he is pleased with Allah as a Lord to enter into the servitude of worship, and with Islam as a religion to become deeply rooted in it. So let not pride dispute with him in his robe of majesty, and his garment of greatness, and his crown of glory, and his adornment of beauty. And let not pride dispute with him in what he manages of the laws, and what he manifests of the knowledge, and judges by it over his servants from His decree and destiny.
And when fear indicates sins, the most important thing for them is relief from it. Allah, the Exalted, said: "For them is forgiveness," meaning a great covering that comes over all of their sins.
And when joy is completed by giving, He said: "And a great reward," meaning from the bounty of Allah. It will be for them, by which they will be honored, making them forget what they endured in this world of severe pains. And the pleasures of this world will become insignificant in comparison to it.
