Commentary
And when he mentioned what has preceded of his gentleness ﷺ towards the weakest of people, the women, and his good manners and noble companionship, for he is naturally inclined to compassion for the servants of Allah and mercy towards them, and he concluded with what is for the believers of honor and for Allah of complete power. This resulted in the humiliation of their enemies and their disgrace. He said, while concealing from them the danger of that day, 'The best of creation ﷺ should be united in his obedience to Him, glorified and exalted is He, between opposites of gentleness and severity, pleasure and anger, forbearance and vengeance, and others. This would be a clearer indication of worshiping Allah by what He has commanded, glorified and exalted is He, and embodying His commands and all that pleases Him: 'O Prophet' (p-206), calling with the means of mediation to make it heard by the middle nation, alerting them that they are indeed the ones called in reality. And for the sake of its indication of mediation, and Allah knows best, it would not be followed except by what has a great significance. Expressing with the description indicating elevation by informing of the divine news based on rulings and greatness that leads to victory. As for the description of the message, mercy prevails in it, and his inclination towards gentleness and diplomacy increases, considering the description of lordship: 'Strive against the disbelievers,' meaning those who openly oppose with all that can hinder them from the sword and what is less than it, so that they may know that the lions only gained from your assault. He knows that this gentleness towards the people of Allah is indeed from the completeness of your intellect, the abundance of your knowledge, your virtue, your great forbearance, your fear of Allah, and your nobility: 'And the hypocrites' [meaning those who conceal] with what is appropriate for them from the evidence if they persist in concealment, and the sword if needed if they show a type of opposition. 'And be harsh' means be severe in action and words with reprimand, deterrence, distancing, and abandonment 'against them.' For indeed, harshness towards them is from gentleness for Allah, just as gentleness towards the people of Allah is from the fear of Allah. And He commanded him, glorified and exalted is He, to be gentle towards them at first to remove their excuses and clarify their persistence. When gentleness reached its utmost limit, he was permitted to move to harshness and exceed it. It has become clear by this verse that I should prefer the words of the women to Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: '(p-207) You are more severe and harsher than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' at his door, and there is no harm in that.
And when the vengeance of the ally against the enemy is indeed for Allah, glorified and exalted is He, He observed it for him. Thus, it was necessary that Allah would not suffice with it in the right of the ally. So the estimation was: for they have no protection nor sanctity in this world nor strength, even if there appeared in their matter otherwise. He added to it His saying: 'And their abode' meaning in the Hereafter 'is Hell' [meaning the lowest degree of the fire that meets them with frowning and hatred].
And when the estimation was: to it is their destination without a doubt, He added to it His saying: 'And wretched is the destination,' meaning it. So that is the recompense of Allah for them for their wrongdoing towards His allies and their belittling of His beloved ones.
