And when the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was the greatest one intended by the matter of the nation to be disciplined with him, it was known that deliberately neglecting the etiquette with him is disbelief. He knew that this fire is for those people. So he knew that the meaning is: they say, "O you who have disbelieved," meaning by neglecting the etiquette with the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. This led them to neglect the etiquette with Allah and the etiquette with all of His creation. "Do not excuse yourselves," meaning do not exaggerate in showing excuses, which is finding ways to remove what has appeared of shortcomings. "Today," for it is the Day of Judgment, not the Day of excuses. The time for excuses has passed, and the matter has become as it has become. And if he forbade exaggeration in excuses due to their ineffectiveness, then the prohibition of it in general is even more appropriate. This cuts off their hope and necessitates their punishment, so that their concern may grow and their hearts may be broken, because its meaning is that the excuse will not benefit you even if you exaggerate in it. For this reason, he began his statement in a restrictive manner: "Indeed, you will be recompensed" meaning on this day, "for what you used to" meaning for what is for you, like your nature and disposition, "do" [meaning] in a way of persistence. And there is no distance for Allah in that He may depict for each person the image of his deeds, such that there is no doubt that it is his deed. Then He makes that image his punishment, in which he finds from the pain what He, glorified and exalted is He, knows is in proportion to his deserving.
