Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, conveyed His admonition to the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, while preserving their dignity by not naming them out of respect for him, and He knew their possession of these great attributes due to their continuous companionship with him, so that they may be among his wives in Paradise. Their possession of that which led them to the utmost happiness is indeed due to the good upbringing of their guardians towards them, and the completion of that upbringing through the good companionship with him, blessings and peace be upon him. Their adherence to his noble character resulted in the matter of the community following his example in these complete morals and emulating their guardians in that, so that they may know the right of Allah and the right of their husbands, thus achieving the rectification of relationships that yield all good. So Allah, the Most High, said, following this specific admonition with a general admonition indicating the obligation of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is wrong, beginning with those closest: "O you who..." addressing the youngest of them, indicating that those above them have emulated since the time of their entering Islam, for He is in no need of a new command. "Those who have believed," meaning they have acknowledged that. "Protect yourselves," meaning make for them a protection by emulating him, blessings and peace be upon him, in his manners with the creation and the Creator, in his gentleness towards those who deserve gentleness from the creation, in glorification of the Creator. So treat Him before all else with what He treats you with in terms of manners, and likewise be with the rest of the creation.
And when a person is a shepherd of his household, responsible for his flock, Allah, the Most High, said: "And your families," meaning the women and children and all who fall under this name, "protect them from the Fire" through advice and upbringing, so that they may embody the morals of the family of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, as Ahmad and al-Tabarani narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Aas, may Allah be pleased with him, who raised it: "A father has not given a child anything better than good manners." And when things are not honored in themselves or in the eyes of the one informing about them except by informing him of what they encompass of attributes, He said: "Its fuel is men and stones," meaning the softest of things and the hardest of them; thus what lies between that is fuel for it in the first place.
And when He described it with the utmost manners in obedience, He followed it with the description of the guardianship, saying, expressing with a tool of elevation: "Upon it are angels," meaning its matter is in the manner of elevation, so they do not disobey Him in anything for the upbringing of Allah towards it. "Rough," meaning in bodies and hearts, harshness towards its people due to their deserving of that by disobeying the Most High King.
And when the roughness may be accompanied by softness, He said: "Severe," meaning in everything they attempt with words and actions, until it has been narrated that one of them throws into the Fire from among the disbelievers seventy thousand at once.
And when the meaning was that they impose their severity and harshness upon the people of disobedience according to the measures of their deserving. In the midst of that, it causes hearts to tremble because it is by the command of Allah, the Most High. So He said: ﴿They do not disobey Allah﴾, meaning the Sovereign, the Most High, at any time ﴿what He commands them﴾, meaning He has established the command for them at some time.
And when the obedient among us may fall short in some of what is commanded by lacking a pillar or condition or time due to forgetfulness, or sleep, or the like, or by leaving something recommended and the like, or what is similar to it due to whispering or self-talk and the like, it causes them to fall short of performing it at the highest levels, as he ﷺ said in what Ibn Majah narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with both of them, and Al-Tayalisi from Thawban, may Allah be pleased with him: "Be steadfast and you will not be able to enumerate (your deeds)." He said, negating that from them: ﴿And they do﴾, meaning they are renewing with every matter in a manner of continuity ﴿what they are commanded﴾, meaning what the command occurs for them at any time [without any deficiency -], and the action was built for what has not been named its doer as a metaphor for the ease of their submission and an indication that the One who commanded them is known to be Allah, glorified and exalted is He.
