Commentary
﴿Allah has indeed ordained﴾ meaning, the One of Glory and Honor who has no partner and no command for anyone with Him. He expressed it by saying 'ordained' to encourage acceptance of the concession, indicating that this does not detract from piety nor violate the sanctity of the name of Allah. For the people of high aspirations do not like to shift from determination to concession, but rather from concession to determination, or from determination to something similar.
And since the alleviation for this nation is indeed a generosity from Him and an exaltation for this Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, He said: ﴿For you﴾ [meaning] O nation of which you are the head. He expressed it with a source that permits more like His generosity, and He honors it to show the increase of the ultimate aim. He said: ﴿A release﴾ meaning a release ﴿of your oaths﴾ meaning something that allows you from what you have bound yourselves to, sometimes by exception and sometimes by expiation, a great release whereby it returns the situation to what it was before the oath. And He clarified this in Surah Al-Ma'idah, so release your oath and come out of your constriction upon yourself and open your chest to receive what comes to you from the news of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, while you are [free] for it with a good soul and the coolness of the eye. And this indicates that his saying "You are forbidden to me" is like an oath if it is not intended for divorce from the wife nor emancipation for the slave. And if Allah has ordained this for the entire nation as a facilitation for them, then their head is more deserving that He makes that for him. Mujahid said: (p-184) So he freed ﷺ in this incident a neck, and [it has been] said: that his prohibition ﷺ here was by an oath he swore, and at that time there would be no evidence for one who sees that "You are forbidden to me" is an oath. ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning, while the state is that the One characterized by the attributes of perfection ﴿is your Patron﴾ meaning, He acts with you as a close friend would. ﴿The All-Knowing﴾ [meaning] the One who has complete knowledge of your interests and others to an endless extent. ﴿The Wise﴾ meaning, the One who places all that issues from Him for you in the most precise of its places such that it is neither abrogated by Him nor can anyone else change it or anything of it. And Imam Abu Ja'far Ibn Al-Zubair said: This is closely connected to the Surah of Divorce due to the unity of their aims and the proximity of their meanings. It has been thought that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced his wives when he secluded himself in the chamber until Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asked him. The story is well-known, and his choosing ﷺ them had an effect on that, and after his separation from them for a whole month, Allah reproached them in His saying: ﴿And if they conspire against you, then indeed Allah is your Patron﴾ [At-Tahrim: 4] and His saying: ﴿Perhaps your Lord, if he divorces you, will substitute for him better wives than you﴾ [At-Tahrim: 5]. So this Surah and the Surah of Divorce are the closest and most similar to the Surah of Al-Anfal and At-Tawbah due to the proximity of the meanings and the unity of the objectives - ended.
