Commentary
And when the matter of complete annihilation in salvation and destruction resembled the condition of the people of the Hereafter in being judged with justice and virtue, and since the opening of the Surah was a reprimand to women, then it was followed by the command of discipline for the entire community until it concluded with the destruction of the opposers in both abodes. And there were relatives of the disbelievers with the Muslims, and they thought that perhaps they would benefit them. And there were relatives of the Muslims with the disbelievers, and they perhaps imagined that it would harm them. He responded to what one might imagine from that as a discipline for those who deny him, blessings and peace be upon him, from among the women and others: "Allah has struck" [meaning] the King who encompasses everything with power and knowledge "as an example" by which He knows from it the capability of understanding and those who can take admonition from it. "For those who disbelieved" means they have covered the truth against themselves and others, whether they were rebellious or hypocritical in their lack of benefit with their disbelief regarding what exists between them and the believers of connection and ties. They will be treated harshly in both abodes according to what they deserve without favoritism to anyone, even if their status is great, and their rank and aspirations are high, because disbelief cuts off the ties between the disbeliever and the Muslim: "the wife of Noah" whom Allah destroyed for her lies by drowning, and He supported and sheltered him, blessings and peace be upon him, and her name, as it is said, was Wailah. "And the wife of Lot" whom Allah also destroyed for her lies by being struck and swallowed and drowned, and her name, as it is said, was Wailah. And it indicated the similarity by His saying: "They were both" meaning with their being two disbelievers. And He did not say: under them, rather He emphasized the description of servitude attributed to Him, glorified and exalted is He, and the description of righteousness, for that is more magnificent, so it would have a greater impact on the one being admonished and would be more significant, and it would prevent anyone from imagining anything that does not befit their status, blessings and peace be upon them. He said: "Under two servants" meaning each one of them is under a servant, and He expressed that because the effect of people with the King, as previously mentioned, is like His servants. And it indicated the multitude of His servants, highlighting His richness by His saying: "from Our servants."
And when the ranks of closeness are varying according to righteousness, he said: ﴿righteous ones﴾, and they are Nuh and Lut, blessings and peace be upon them. ﴿They betrayed them﴾ by not following them in religion, hypocrisy from both of them, not by betrayal in intimacy. Indeed, Allah has protected all the prophets from that, so neither of them said because of their disbelief: 'My Lord, make me with Your Prophet in Paradise.' And it was indicated that intercession will not be accepted for one who wronged the beloved, and that punishment is certain for the purpose of retribution by His saying: ﴿So﴾, meaning it caused that the two righteous servants did not ﴿avail them﴾, meaning the two women, in the right of marriage ﴿from Allah﴾, meaning from the punishment of the King to whom belongs all command, so there is no command for anyone else ﴿anything﴾, meaning of availing due to their betrayal by opposing in religion. And it indicated the completeness of His power, glorified and exalted is He, by expressing in the unknown, so He said: ﴿And it was said﴾, meaning to the two women, by whom He permitted to speak the decisive words that cannot be revoked: ﴿Enter the Fire﴾, meaning its preliminaries from persistence in disbelief, then destruction by the punishment of vengeance in this world, and its reality in the Hereafter, because Allah hated them for being enemies to His allies. And that is as it is said: 'The enemy of my friend is not my friend.'
And when they acted like men in their independence and did not consider themselves as dependents, the severity of their punishment increased by being with the men in their punishment. So He said, indicating the enforcement of the ruling upon one who is stronger than them after its enforcement upon them: ﴿with the entrants﴾, meaning those who are greater than them, from those who have a connection with the people of Allah and from those who have no connection with them. So let everyone conduct themselves with the Prophet ﷺ with utmost respect, fearing something like that. And this is a cause for the hearts of those who began to discipline them - may Allah be pleased with them.
