Commentary
So it tasted, because of that, after it had much abundance and strength. And it was ruin, meaning, and a punishment, and severity, and weight, and corruption of its matter, meaning, in its arrogance and all that it used to command in. He likened it to the bad pasture that gets sick and perishes. And since every subdued person only consoles himself by waiting for relief and hoping for a good outcome, he despaired of that, reminding of the action, indicating the severity by saying: And the end of its matter, meaning, the last and conclusion of all its deeds that it was in, was loss, meaning, the essence of loss in both abodes. So whenever the matter extended, they found it before them. For indeed, whoever sows thorns, as Al-Qushayri said, does not reap roses. And whoever neglects the right of Allah is not obeyed in the share of himself. And whoever is burned by opposing the command of Allah, the Exalted, let him be patient in enduring the punishment of Allah, the Exalted. Then he explained the loss or resumed the answer for whoever says: Is there for it other than this in this abode, by saying:
