Commentary
And when the repetition of urging towards piety was for the question about its reason, he began his saying as an explanation for it: ﴿That﴾ meaning the mentioned matter of all these high-ranked rulings ﴿is the command of Allah﴾ meaning the supreme King who has all perfection. He pointed out the high rank of the command by saying: ﴿He has sent it down to you﴾. And when the implication was: So whoever rejects it out of desire for the depths of destruction to the lowest of the low, he added to it his saying: ﴿And whoever fears Allah﴾ meaning the one for whom no one has authority over him in terms of attraction and avoidance. And when man is a place of weakness and deficiency, he reassured him that if a slip occurs from him, returning to piety is a kindness towards him, as a reward for his piety in terms of protection and benefit. So he said: ﴿He will cover﴾ meaning he covers with a great covering and conceals and makes disappear and removes ﴿from him﴾ all ﴿his sins﴾ so that he may be free from the things that distance him, for indeed good deeds erase bad deeds. And when the Generous does not accept for the one who comes to Him only forgiveness, he said: ﴿And He will increase for him a reward﴾ by replacing his bad deeds with good deeds and fulfilling his reward in both abodes multiplied, so he adorns himself with the near ones. And this is greater than the mere ease mentioned earlier.
