Commentary
And when he mentioned what He has permitted for them, glorified and exalted is He, and indicated the cutting off by stating that it is from Him due to its consistency in breaking the norms by total eradication and specifically for those who denied the messengers, and the salvation for those who believed in them, he explained it by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning the terrible and great matter of the punishment that certainly indicates that disbelief is the most invalid of invalids and that it is something that angers the Creator. And since its intention was not like the intention of the Forgiver in classifying people into two types, but rather their classification here occurred by presenting the evidence for the Hour, he sufficed with the pronoun of the matter and said: ﴿Because﴾ meaning because the great matter that reaches the extreme in horror ﴿was coming to them﴾ as a continuous habit ﴿their messengers﴾ meaning the messengers of Allah whom He sent to them and specifically for them to be a source of their joy with them ﴿with clear signs﴾ meaning the matters that clarify to the utmost that they are the messengers of Allah from the scriptures and others, so they witnessed the matter from its source, and for that reason, their punishment was more severe.
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, had endowed man with a subtle characteristic from all that He granted him, which is honor and the love of pride and superiority, whoever places it in its rightful place [by being arrogant] towards those whom Allah has commanded to be arrogant towards, and they are the devils of mankind and jinn who disobeyed Him, glorified and exalted is He, will be saved. And whoever places it in a place other than its rightful place by being arrogant towards the allies of Allah, the Lord of Honor, will perish. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, clarified that the disbelievers placed it in a place other than its rightful place: ﴿They said﴾, meaning all of them to their messengers, denying with the utmost denial out of arrogance: ﴿Is there a human﴾, meaning this kind, which is raised as a subject because the question demands action. And since the denial of the group is greater, and if the pronoun were singular, it would not have the awe of the group, he said: ﴿They guide us﴾. So they denied the greatest king sending him to them. ﴿So they disbelieved﴾ in that after the messengers came, and because of it without consideration, reflection, or even the slightest contemplation and insight, out of envy towards the messengers for being equal to them in humanity. They distanced themselves from the idea that a command could be given to them, especially if it were something very great. Thus, they were compelled to commit the ugliest of matters, which is distancing themselves from the idea that the prophet could be a human while acknowledging that the deity could be a stone. ﴿And they turned away﴾, meaning they imposed upon themselves the opposite of what the original nature calls for, which is turning away from the messengers after denying their message due to a doubt that arose in them. This is because they said: Indeed, Allah is great and does not resemble humans, so His messengers should be from beyond humanity. If they had truly contemplated, they would have known that this is not the case, and that the messengers are indeed angels. However, since not all of mankind is able to see the angels as is necessitated by the greatness they imagined and did not affirm in its true form, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, selected from among humanity people, and they are the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, with an additional strength that He endowed them with to enable them to deal with Him. They came to them to be intermediaries between Allah and His creation, for some of the kind are more inclined to some and more receptive. And since all of this is for the interests of creation, it does not return to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, nor does it benefit Him from His existence, nor does it harm Him if He is absent, nor vice versa. He alerted to this by saying: ﴿And Allah is Self-Sufficient﴾, meaning the action of the greatest king [who has] no command for anyone with Him, the action of one who seeks independence from them and has created it in a great creation from those whom He guided to follow the messengers. So He turned away from them when they turned away from His messengers, and their turning away harmed them, while His turning away from them did not harm Him. They harmed only themselves, and He declared independence to encompass everything.
And when the expression by that may imply the occurrence of what did not exist for it, He negated that by His saying, making evident an increase in greatness: "And Allah" meaning the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection without being constrained by any aspect. "Self-sufficient" from all of creation entirely. "Praiseworthy" for Him is the attribute of absolute richness and the most comprehensive praise, which is the encompassing of all attributes of perfection. For Him is the permanence eternally and forever; nothing new occurs for Him that did not exist.
