Commentary
And when he judged concerning some, it was as if it was said: What is the judgment concerning the rest? So it was as if the judgment by that necessitated caution from all. However, for the sake of clarification, there is a great secret in the inclination of the soul towards it. He said, encompassing all, gathering to them the wealth by which all of that stands, and he presented it because it is the greatest trial: ﴿Indeed﴾. And he omitted the neighbor because something from that does not escape the occupation of the heart. He said: ﴿Your wealth﴾, meaning generally, ﴿and your children﴾ likewise, ﴿is a trial﴾, meaning a test that diverts you from Allah. He is more knowledgeable of what is in your souls than you are. However, it is to manifest in the realm of testimony who is diverted by that, so it becomes a punishment upon him from one who is not diverted, and it becomes a blessing for him. Perhaps a person seeks the righteousness of his wealth and his children, so he exaggerates and corrupts himself, then he does not rectify his wealth or his children. And that is [because] it is of his nature to resort to earning the unlawful, withholding the truth, and falling into sin. It has been narrated from Abu Na'im in Al-Hilyah in the biography of Sufyan Al-Thawri from him that he said: "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to him: The eating of his family is his good deeds." And the trial of wealth is enough [as an example] the story of Tha'labah ibn Hatib, one of those regarding whom His saying has been revealed: ﴿And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah that if He gave us from His bounty, we would surely give charity﴾ [At-Tawbah: 75]. And it is as if He, glorified and exalted is He, left the mention of spouses in the trial because among them are those who are righteous and a help for the Hereafter.
And when the estimation was: So in guarding against their trials is great toil, which does not yield from them to a small share, and the soul, when leaving its ambiguities and its beloved things, may recoil. He softened it for him by indicating its transience and He promised him with that which has no comparison to it with its permanence, His saying: ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning the Lord of Glory, ﴿has with Him﴾, and suffice you with what comes from Him by virtue of His majesty and greatness, ﴿a reward﴾. And He did not suffice, glorified is He, with the indication of the context that the tanween is for glorification until His description with His saying: ﴿Great﴾, meaning for whoever obeys His commands, which are only beneficial for their possessor. So he did not present to His pleasure wealth or children, and that reward is greater than your benefit with your wealth and your children in a way that diminishes from obedience.
