Commentary
And when this was painful for him due to their turning away from him, along with the lack of means to respond to them, it was known that this is indeed only to Him and that He is the All-Powerful over it. So he said in response to one who might have said: What is the means regarding them? Completing my oath of religion by seeking help after clarifying my other oath, which is worship: ﴿Allah﴾, meaning the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection. ﴿There is no deity except Him﴾, for He is the All-Powerful over their acceptance, and no one else can do that. To Him is the refuge in every repulsion and benefit, and He is the one sought for assistance in every matter. So to Him alone should the guided ones hope for their guidance. ﴿And upon Allah﴾, meaning the One to whom belongs all matters, not to anyone else. And when absolute faith is the affirmation of Allah by believing that He is the All-Powerful over everything, then there is no matter for anyone alongside Him, nor is there any equal to Him. So how about being firmly rooted in it? Alert to this, which necessitates the connection with 'fa' and the emphasis with the 'lam' of command in His saying: ﴿Let the believers put their trust﴾, meaning the trust should be established in a way that is of utmost clarity and deep-rootedness in this description in response to the one who turns away from them if there occurs from them a turning away. Likewise, in every lost matter, chastity is not exclusive to the existent. Just as the law of justice in the existent is obedience, the law of justice in the lost is reliance. Likewise, the actions of the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, had the greatest share in every reliance, especially when the Arabs turned away after the death of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. And the one most deserving of this description was Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, as is known by those who look into the compiled books in the biographies and news of the apostasy, especially my book titled in the news of the apostasy.
