Commentary
And when the decree was: So be patient against the onslaught of calamities, he added to it his saying as a warning against being preoccupied with them [which would lead to destruction and cut off the means of salvation, indicating the necessity of learning religious matters from their opposition -] pointing out that worship is not accepted except by following, not by innovation: ﴿And obey Allah﴾ meaning the Most High King, to whom belongs all command. So do what He has legislated for you in every calamity and trial that befalls you and every matter that overtakes you. He emphasized by repeating the command to indicate that standing at the limits, especially during calamities, is extremely difficult. He said: ﴿And obey the Messenger﴾ meaning the one who is complete in his prophethood ﷺ for he is protected by what he was created with of balance [and] what he purified with from the splitting of the chest and washing of the heart repeatedly, and what he was supported with from revelation. Thus, actions that are guided by reason along with obedience to Allah and following His Messenger ﷺ in every endeavor and retreat are balanced, whether they are sensual or angry. Whenever they are not like that, they become deviant to the higher or the lower, and they are blameworthy. For indeed, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, by His gentle management, has instilled in man a force of anger that drives him towards what destroys and harms him, and a force of desire that attracts what nurtures and strengthens him. So, the balance of anger is courage, its deficiency is cowardice, and its excess is recklessness. People are considered in terms of it as cowardly, courageous, and reckless. And the balance of desire is chastity, its deficiency is asceticism, and its excess is greed. People are considered in terms of it as ascetic, chaste, and greedy. Both extremes of pursuing matters are blameworthy, and the measure of justice is following the Messenger ﷺ in what he has legislated. By this, the apparent and hidden trials are removed, and there is no path to Allah except by what He has legislated. Every path that He has not legislated is misguidance from disbelief to what has been recorded. Then he caused from His command that saying, expressing with a tool of doubt, indicating the good news of preserving this nation from apostasy and implying that some of them will fall into that, then their return or destruction is near: ﴿So if you turn away﴾ meaning you burden yourselves when you turn away from this greatest light and lean towards one of the extremes understood from the two extremes of intention. So, there is nothing upon our Messenger from your turning away. ﴿So upon our Messenger﴾ he attributed it to him in a manner of greatness, magnifying him and threatening those who turn away from him. ﴿The clear message﴾ (p-127) meaning the evident in itself, manifesting to everyone that he has made it clear to him to the utmost clarity and left no ambiguity. The creation of guidance in hearts is not up to him.
