هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُواْ عَلَىٰ مَنۡ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّواْۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفۡقَهُونَ ٧ ﴿7
7They are those who say, “Do not spend on those who are with Allah’s Messenger until they disperse. And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.

And when this was a reason to ask about the matter by which they became disobedient, he said, clarifying it: ﴿They are﴾ meaning their innermost selves ﴿those who say﴾ meaning they have produced this saying and they continue to renew it because they were tied to the causes, veiled from witnessing the decree, not realizing the management of the rulings. So what overwhelmed their hearts was the desire to extinguish the light of Allah, and they advised one another with their saying: ﴿Do not spend﴾ O you who are sincere in support ﴿on those﴾ meaning those ﴿who are with the Messenger of Allah﴾ meaning the king who encompasses everything, and it was as if they expressed that while [not] believing it mockingly, indicating that if the Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) were the absolute richness, he would have sufficed his companions and would not have made them dependent on people spending on them. But there is no guidance for whom Allah leads astray, and for this reason, He expressed in response to them with His saying: ﴿And to Allah﴾ meaning they said [that] and continued to renew their saying while the situation is that for the king who has no command for anyone with him, for he is the commanding and forbidding ﴿are the treasures of the heavens﴾ [meaning all of them] ﴿and the earth﴾ likewise of the nonexistent things that fall under the capability of "Indeed, His command is that when He intends a thing, He says to it, 'Be,' and it is." And of the things He has created, He gives to whom He wills of it what He wills, even from their hands; no one has the power to prevent anything from that, neither from what is in his hand nor from what is in the hand of another. And He pointed out their great ignorance and that they were bound by delusion until they fell below the rank of animals, as some of them said: If Muhammad is truthful, then we are worse than animals. He referred to that with His saying: ﴿But the hypocrites﴾ meaning those deeply entrenched in the description of hypocrisy.

And when what is provided to creation in terms of sustenance is thought by many of them to be obtained by their own strength, he expressed this with the more specific understanding of knowledge and said: ﴿They do not understand﴾. This means they do not have any understanding at all, because animals, when they see something that benefits them at some time, seek it again in the place of its request. These people have seen more than once what Allah has brought forth of extraordinary blessings through the hand of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, yet that did not benefit them. So whoever sees that his sustenance is in the hands of creation and is distracted by that from Allah until he neglects his rights and compromises in his religion, then he has disassociated himself from the Qur'an.
